My husband and I worked with Jerry at Braniff. He was one of the most skilled and dedicated mechanics in maintenance overhaul. He was an all around good guy.
Jerry Doyle Turner
Jerry D. Turner, age 87 passed away peacefully on Saturday afternoon, March 21, 2026 while in Tyler at Hospice of East Texas after a battle with dementia.
Jerry was born on January 2, 1939 in Mineola, Texas to Lucille and Sherwood Turner. He grew up in the Mineola and Hawkins areas where he built the strong work ethic and love for family that would define his life.
He proudly served his country in the United States NAVY from August 1956 until June 1959. On June 2, 1961, he married the love of his life, Zelma, beginning a devoted partnership that spanned 64 wonderful years. Together, they had two children, Jerry Wayne and Cheryl Lynn.
Jerry Spent his career as an aircraft mechanic, working for Braniff and later American Airlines until his retirement in 2001. He was known for his skill, dedication and the pride he took in his work. He could talk about the ins and outs of airplanes for hours.
Outside of his career, Jerry found great joy in traveling with Zelma. Together, they made countless memories exploring Colorado, Wyoming and Alaska. They especially cherished their cabin in the mountains of Colorado where they enjoyed fishing and riding ATV’s while surrounded by the beauty of the outdoors.
Jerry was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Norman Turner; sister, Shirley Todd and daughter, Cheryl.
He is survived by his loving wife, Zelma Turner; son and daughter-in-law, Jerry and Karen Turner; grandchildren, Jordan and Abbie; sister-in-law, Mary Turner as well as many nieces and nephews who will remember him fondly.
Jerry will be remembered for his strength, devotion to family and the life built through hard work and devotion. His presence will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
A graveside service will be held at 11 AM Tuesday, March 24, 2026 at Turner Cemetery in Hawkins with Bro. Wayne Spanhanks officiating. Interment will follow under the direction of Horn Family Funeral Home.
Those serving as pallbearers include, Wade Turner, Jason Turner, Jordan Bice, Beeper Krause, Kenneth Hooten and Ronnie Hooten.
