Andrew "Topper" Williams
Celebrating the life of Andrew “Topper” Williams, a beloved figure whose profound simplicity and love for nature marked every aspect of his life. Born on November 23, 1943, in Montgomery, Alabama, Andrew later made his home in Avinger, Texas, where he immersed himself in the joys of gardening, hunting, fishing, and carpentry.
Andrew’s early years were shaped by his dedication to education and service. A proud alumnus of Waldo Matthew High School in Silsbee, Texas, he excelled in football and track before advancing his education at Jarvis Christian University in Hawkins, Texas. There, he earned a Bachelor of Arts in History with a minor in Government in 1968. Andrew was a member of the football team and was deeply involved on campus, serving on the Student Council, as Business Manager. He was a member of the Social Science Club, served as Dean of Men in 1969/1970, and as Chief Security Officer in 1969. He was also a geography instructor and reliably served as a chauffeur for university students and the president. His commitment to higher education continued at East Texas State University in Commerce, Texas, where he nearly completed a Master’s degree.
Andrew’s professional life was as diverse as it was distinguished. He proudly served in the U.S. Army as part of the Military Police and broke barriers as the first African-American appointed as U.S. Deputy Marshal of the Eastern District in the State of Texas where he served for 5 years. Most of his career was spent on the road as an over-the-road long-haul truck driver, a role he cherished for over 30 years.
In 1969, Andrew married Margaret Chism, and together they were blessed with three children: Melody, Caesar, and Dexter. He was a devoted husband and father, instilling in his children the values of faith, as he had accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior at a young age.
Andrew is survived by his loving family: daughter, Melody Williams; sons, Caesar Williams (Yulonda), Dexter Williams (Shalonda); and grandchildren, Tristian Williams, Jurnee Williams, and Jayda Williams. A host nieces, nephews, other cherished family members, and friend of the family Melaina Williams. He was preceded in death by his parents, Will Williams Sr. and Gertrude Hawkins Williams; sister, Elnora Haynes; and brothers, Anderson Williams and Will Williams.
Andrew “Topper” Williams lived a life that was rich in love, laughter, and tireless work. He will be remembered for his deep faith, strength of character, and immense kindness. As we reflect on his life, we are reminded of the beauty and resilience of the human spirit.
