Shelia was born on May 15, 1931 to Carlos and Elva McCullough of DeKalb, Texas. In 1951 she married Robert E. "Bob" Hurtte. She was a graduate of East Texas Baptist University in Marshall. In 1968 she received a Master of Education Degree from East Texas State University. She later received her Administrative Certification at Stephen F. Austin University in 1988.Sheila was a public school educator for 40 years. During her career she served as a teacher, counselor, principal, assistant superintendent, curriculum director, and superintendent at Daingerfield-Lone Star ISD. After her retirement in 1991, she also served as interim superintendent at Pittsburg ISD, Hughes Spring ISD, and Avinger ISD.One of her notable accomplishments included serving on the Board of Trustees at East Texas Baptist University for 20 years. In 1988, she was selected as one of the five regional winners for State Superintendent of the Year. She also received the East Texas Baptist University Distinguished Alumni Award in 1989. She received many honors and awards during her career including the Daingerfield Lions Club Lifetime Achievement Award in 2009.Shelia served on many local civic and educational organizations. She served the maximum years allowable on the State Bar of Texas Grievance Committee and also as the district chairperson of the Texas Retired Teachers Organization. She was a member of the Daingerfield-Lone Star Educational Foundation, Retired Teachers Association, Business and Professional Women's Club, and P.E.O. She also served on numerous regional and state educational committees.She was preceded in death by parents, her son, Michael Hurtte and granddaughter, Hannah Ruth Hurtte. She is survived by her husband, Robert E. "Bob" Hurtte; daughter and son-in-law Cindy and Jim Hart of Mt. Pleasant; son and daughter-in-law Robert and Frances Hurtte of Houston; and daughter-in-law Ann Hurtte of Junction,Texas. Also, four grandsons: Joel Hart, Mason, Cole, and Kyle Hurtte.
