Jessie Josephine Cole Elkins was born on June 2nd, 1936 in Whitter, North Carolina to Laura and Jesse Cole. She passed peacefully in her sleep at the age of 89 in her home on May 30th, 2025 with her husband by her side. Mrs. Elkins graduated from Sylva High School in North Carolina. She was a devoted wife and mother to her family, moving from North Carolina to Houston, Texas and then made several homes throughout Texas before retiring in Hughes Springs, Quinlan and finally Longview, Texas. She was an amazing wife and mother and maintained her family with love and compassion. Her children called her blessed because she was blessed. Her neighbors thought of her as a wonderful person who showed love equally to all. She enjoyed gardening in the spring, fishing in the fall, traveling when she could and singing her favorite songs “Softly and Tenderly” and “Amazing Grace”. She would never allow anyone to come over without having a sweet treat or meal waiting for you. A loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother Mrs. Elkins was preceded in death by her parents, twin brother, two brothers and three sisters. Those left to cherish her memories include her husband of 69 years George Harrison Elkins of Longview; her daughters Kathy Moore and husband Fayet Moore of Longview, Martha Dickey and husband Jack Dickey of Hot Springs, Arkansas; sons Jimmy Elkins of Boise, Idaho, and Donnie Elkins and wife Karen Elkins of Amarillo, Texas; as well as 12 grandchildren; and 12 great grandchildren. Her family and friends will miss her greatly. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the wonderful staff at Hospice Plus. The family request memorials be made to a food bank of your choice or homeless ministry of your choice. A visitation will be held at Horn-Nail-Haggard Funeral Home on Sunday, June 8, 2025 from 3-6 PM. A graveside service will be held at 10 AM on Monday, June 9, 2025, at Veal Switch Cemetery.

  1. So sad to hear this. I have so many memories of the Elkins…I will always remember when I was a child and they lived next door. Jesse came running (during the middle of the night) banging on our door and screaming “Booth Booth Help there’s a bobcat in my house!” We lived in a wooded area near Houston and she had been doing laundry and had the garage and laundry doors open. All her kids were a sleep in the house. My dad and brother Ron got a big fish net and a shot gun and caught and killed the bobcat. Just a silly remory but one chuldhood memory of a interesting, sweet lady. She was loved by all.
