Dennis Harris, Jr. Dennis Ray “D.R.” Harris, Sr. ascended into the arms of Jesus on February 16, 2023 surrounded by his family. D.R. was born March 11,1934 in Hornbeck, Louisiana to parents John Henry and Dora Burleson Harris. He met and married his wife of 66 years, Marilyn Harris Smith in Kilgore, Texas in 1952. D.R, worked for Dowell for 35 years both in Colorado City Texas and Kilgore. After his retirement he went to work for F.T. Williams followed by Lebus and lastly for Basic Energy. He accepted Jesus as his Savior as a young adult and served many years as a deacon at Eastview Baptist Church in Kilgore, Texas. D.R. enjoyed riding dirt bikes, fishing, and collecting miniature trains, die cast automobiles and black powder firearms. D.R. had a love for Colorado City, Texas where he spent much time living and working before moving back to Kilgore. D.R. was preceded in death by his wife, parents, and brothers John Jr, Glen, Joe, and sister Una V Gilliand. D.R. is survived by sons Dennis Harris, Jr and wife Patti of Longview, James Harris of Kilgore; daughters Cheryl Edwards of Hallsville, Diane Johnson of Kilgore, Holly Woodmansee and husband Michael of Tyler. D.R. is also survived by brother M.L. “Red” Harris and wife Jimmie of Kilgore and sisters Mary Van Valkenburg of Weirton, West Virginia and Robin Richardson and husband Ronny of Liberty City along with 13 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren and two great- great grandchildren and a numerous nieces and nephews A celebration of life will be held at 11 AM Saturday, March 11, 2023 at Fellowship Baptist Church, 1818 Spring Hill Road, Longview, Texas. The family will receive friends for a time of visitation beginning at 10:00 AM prior to the service. Services are entrusted to Horn-Nail-Haggard Funeral Home of Daingerfield.

  1. When I was a young boy of about four years of age, my grand parents, John Henry and Dora Harris,lived in fox addition of Kilgore,Texas. They did not have an indoor toilet at the time. It was my uncle Dennis who found me deeply entrenched in the out door toilet out back and pulled me out to safety. A true story never to be forgotten.
