We honor you today, Sister Bernice G. Calvin… On September 10, 2024, a beacon of light and a hope to all who embraced her, Bernice G. Calvin (Bernie) closed her eyes and said goodbye to this world and joined hands with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Bernie was born on June 18, 1926 to Dan and Equilla Garrett. She was raised and attended school in Copiah County of Hazelhurst, Mississippi. Bernie confessed Jesus Christ at the age of ten and was saved at Zion Hill Church of God in Christ, then later joined Springridge MB Church. After she graduated from high school, Bernie moved to Chicago, Illinois, where she attended Miller Business College. On June 19, 1949, at the age of 23, Bernie married the love of her life, the late Willie B. Calvin, for 45 years. To this union, two children were born. Throughout her life she was a very devoted and loving mother. Bernie was also a social butterfly, and loved to fellowship with others to talk about many topics. Her outspoken leadership quality always had others longing to be like her. Her special honors include completion of Computer Classes, winner of a Spelling Bee, and winner of a Hat Modeling Contest. Bernie loved to knit, needle point, bowl, read novels, journal, do crossword puzzles and jigsaw puzzles. She loved to travel to various cities in the United States and take cruises. She enjoyed volunteering at Rush Hospital Medical Center for over 20 years, and volunteering for her Church, New Landmark MB Church, where she was a member since 1980, and served as a member of the Sunday School Class, Adult Women #1, the Drama Club, and treasurer for Club #4. Bernie is an eye catcher, always elegantly dressed with accented jewelry and attractive finger nails completing her 6’3” tall silhouette. With wisdom from God being her pillar of strength, she ministered to many relatives and friends, consoling and inspiring them to reach new heights. Bernie leaves behind, her younger sister, Linda Lamb; her children Dr. Valerie Jean Forte and her husband Louis (Author), Wilfred B. Calvin (Semi-Pro Football Player) and his wife Pamela and Sue Calvin; her grandchildren, Alvin, Imhotet and his wife Andrea, Keenan, Cole, Cydney, Alaina, Deborah and her husband Joe, D’Anthony and his wife Christina, Dija and her husband Barry; and her great grandchildren, Harlow, Giovanni, Ember, Ike, Darwin, Devian, Jeremiah, Michele, and Lazurus, with a host of Relatives, Friends and her longtime friend Theodore Rogers (Ted). A NOTE FROM BERNICE CALVIN: As you remember me try not to cry, but remember all that we’ve shared and laughed about. I will always love you, and I am looking forward to seeing you soon. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Trust The Good Lord for all your needs, help whenever you can, and try to love everyone. Love “Bernie”. Local arrangements have been entrusted to Horn-Nail-Haggard Funeral Home in Daingerfield.
