Larry Dean Ward
April 29, 1952 ~ September 25, 2024
Larry Dean Ward, 72, was born on April 29, 1952, to Freddie and Frances Ward in Overton, Texas. He departed this world to be with Jesus on Wednesday, September 25, 2024, at Good Shepherd Hospital, surrounded by the love of his family.
Larry’s passion for music blossomed at the age of twelve when he first picked up a Baritone/Euphonium. He quickly made his mark, marching the Leverett’s Chapel Band as a seventh grader. After transferring to Kilgore High School in his sophomore year, he proudly performed in the Texas All-State Band by his senior year, showcasing his extraordinary talent.
He further nurtured his musical journey at Kilgore College and Stephen F. Austin State University, where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education and a Master’s Degree in Composition. During his Master’s program, he had the honor of serving as a Graduate Assistant and later as the Assistant Director under the esteemed Mel Montgomery.
Over an inspiring 39-year career as a Band Director, Larry shaped countless young musicians, leading his bands to numerous awards and accolades. His marching bands captivated audiences, moving with military precision while filling the air with the rich sounds of a concert ensemble. Concert performances left listeners in awe, appreciating the artistry and beauty that defined his work.
Larry also had a deep passion for woodworking and flowers, but you could often find him in his favorite chair, legs crossed, engrossed in charting or staff paper as he diligently crafted drill formations and arranged music. Even after retirement, he continued to support local bands, sharing his expertise and love for music.
Throughout his illustrious career, Larry taught thousands of students, many of whom have become successful music educators, including the Director of Bands at Texas A&M University, the Director of Bands at the University of Tennessee, the Principal Bassoonist for the New York City Ballet, and members of the Pershing’s Own Band in Washington, D.C.
In his final years, Larry devoted himself to caring for his beloved mother, whom he loved dearly, ensuring she had everything she needed. He made it a point to keep her stocked with groceries and cherished their drives for ice cream.
Larry was preceded in death by his father, Rev. Freddie L. Ward; his brother, Jimmy Ward; and his wife, Jeannie Taylor Ward, along with Grandparents, Jeff and Jeannie Ward, and Ed and Mary Ann Gassaway.
He is survived by his 99-year-old mother, Frances Ward of Longview; his sons Alan Ward and his wife Hannah of Berkeley, CA, and Jeffrey Ward and his wife Kristyn of Philadelphia, PA; and his former spouse and friend, Cristin Williams of Midlothian, TX.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, September 29, 2024, at Woodlands Hills Baptist Church at 2:00 PM, followed by a Celebration of Life Service at 3:00 PM, officiated by Pastor John Armitage. Pallbearers will include Gary Goodwin, Anthony Anderson, Don Lawler, Allen Miller, Mark Melton, Mike Geddie, Wayne Smith, Mark Scotchmer, Bobby Richardson, and Jim Hughes, with Phi Beta Mu serving as Honorary Pallbearers. Burial will follow at Danville Cemetery under the direction of Horn-Nail-Haggard Funeral Home.
Larry cherished his sons deeply and found immense joy in visiting them in California and Hawaii. He delighted in sharing stories with anyone who would listen, beaming with pride as he spoke of their achievements and successful careers. His love for them was boundless, and his pride unwavering.
Larry’s legacy is one of inspiration and passion, woven into the lives of all who had the privilege to learn from him. He will be deeply missed, but his spirit will forever resonate through the music he loved and the hearts he touched.

Larry was my oldest Daughters Band Director all three years of high school and the first director that I ran the Lufkin High School band camp for. This forged a relations ship that lasted a lifetime. Our “One time at Band Camp” story was based on an adventure trying to write parts for a march the Waymon Bullock only had on a very poor cassette tape. Will never forget mine and Larry’s frustration. Only those who knew Larry and Waymon will appreciate this story. I will miss our phone conversations my Friend.
One time at Band a camp! Just love this!
Mr. Ward was a great band director and stellar human being. We were so lucky to have him at Whitehouse High School in the mid 1980’s…we had a tiny band, and we almost always scored 1’s at our competitions.
His legacy lives on, as I’m a Neurologic Music Therapist in behavioral health, teaching those in crisis how to use music as medicine.

We had no idea. He responded to music the most these last two weeks. It was amazing!
Mrs. Frances Ward, and sons Jeffrey and Alan: I am sorry for the loss of Larry. We had been friends since high school. Through the years, I have watched many of his videos on YouTube of his marching bands at Kingwood High School 1994 and for many years after that. Larry was a very special friend. He was a TRUE friend. One of the most talented musicians I have ever known. He was a friend who you might not talk to for a couple of years and then pick right back up where you left off.
Mr. Ward was a wonderful band director and he will be missed. My condolences. <3 Krystal Barton (Fochtman) KHS class of 2005
