September 18, 1952 ~ July 25, 2024

Fred Isaac Mitchell (Freddy), a devoted husband, grandfather and friend, completed his earthly life on July 25, 2024, at the age of 71. Born on September 18, 1952, in Shreveport, Louisiana, to parents Fred Mitchell Sr. and Bernice Mitchell, Freddy lived a godly and full life, which was dedicated to the Lord in his faith, family and community. Freddy is survived by his wife of 40 years, Bobbye Mitchell; son, Clint Hill (wife, Rachel Hill); daughter, Emily Hill Jackson (husband, Michael Jackson), grandson, Brooks Hill; granddaughter, Kerigan Hill; brother, Timothy Mitchell (wife, Pam Mitchell) and nephews, Matthew and Timothy Paul Mitchell; and sister, Sue Mitchell and nephew, Brian James; brother-in-law, Jim Newsom (wife, Pamie) and niece, Abby. Freddy was a 1970 graduate of Fair Park High School in Shreveport, LA where he participated in athletic sports events, especially on the Indians baseball team (Freddy played 3rd base), which won the 1970 AAA State Title by defeating 3 great teams within a 24-hour period. Freddy graduated in 1976 from Louisiana Tech University, where he played football (safety position) for the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs. After graduating college, Freddy worked in various fields of employment: sales (Elliott Electric), landman, and the past 5 years as an employee of Horn Professional Mortuary Service. Freddy’s passion for sports was a constant, as he enjoyed playing golf and cheering on his beloved New York Yankees! He combined his love of both sports and family by always being present in the stands to cheer on his grandson, Brooks, in football, basketball and baseball, as well as cheering on his granddaughter, Kerigan, as she performed her cheerleader duties. He was a doting grandfather! Ever the humble man of God, never seeking the limelight, Freddy unselfishly shared his faith and talents at various nursing homes by playing the guitar and singing songs to uplift the spirits of those in need. Both Freddy and Bobbye participated in church related functions and faithfully served as Sunday School teachers. Let us not forget that Freddy enjoyed the simple things in life that so many of us can relate too. Such as enjoying the taste of a cold Dr. Pepper, and a good portion of Peanut M&Ms to snack on! Freddy will be remembered for his warm embracing smile, devotion to God, family and his many friends. Freddy ran a good race and will definitely be missed by many! Freddy’s family cordially invites you to come and participate in a Memorial Worship Service (a celebration of his profound legacy and witness), which will be held at Mobberly Baptist Church, 625 E Loop 281, Longview, Texas, at 11:00 AM on Monday, July 29th. Services are entrusted to Horn-Nail-Haggard Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made in honor of Freddy to: https://www.stjude.org/donate

  2. I was saddened to learn that another one of my classmates has passed. Prayers of comfort and peace go out to his loving family and friends. I knew him and I testify that he was a fine outstanding person and friend to all who knew him. I’m sure those who were close to Freddy will certainly be missed. The best to his family.

  4. One of the best guys I’ve ever met. We lived corner to corner on the same street. Same schools, Werner Park, Midway, Fair Park. Teammates, classmates. I moved to Minden, and boy was I surprised to see him come to Minden as the United Methodist Youth leader. My heart is broken of his earthly life, but I know he is rejoicing with our Savior, Jesus Christ, today. Prayers for all of his family.

  5. When I was in Fred and Bobbye’s small group I admired how kind and happy Freddy was. He will be missed.
My deepest sympathy goes out to Bobbye and his entire family.
    God Bless you all.

So glad we all got to be together and reminisce at our last 50th class reunion ! Freddy always had the sweetest smile ! He was such a fantastic athlete and we loved cheering on Freddy and our guys in their sports – esp that baseball team !!

  7. I am so thankful for having known Freddy as a brother in Christ at Mobberly Baptist Church. He led our class numerous times by opening our lesson with a song and guitar playing. He shared the Lords peace, love and kindness with the songs He chose. Always a message of hope also. He will never be forgotten and I look forward to seeing him again one day.

  8. Freddie was a joy, example, great friend, and teammate to me growing up together from Werner Park to Fair Park. Always a helpful hand, and instructive even as a child. He was first class with character, first string baseball and football just ahead of me. He was a leader and a caring example to all of us. Thank you, my brother in faith.

  9. Freddy was the guy that when you thought of him it always brought a smile to your face. He was a great friend to me. Kathy and I send our love to the family.

  10. Freddy and I grew up together in the Westview Christian Church. Church camp and youth group influenced us to follow the Lord with our lives. We both decided to follow the Lord with our lives at camp and dedicated our lives to our families and to our Lord. The Mitchell’s home was a place I spent spare time with two brothers Freddy and Tim, that adopted me in to their lives. Gifted athlete, dedicated Christian, and friend with a guitar. A youth sponsor named Rusty Shaffer taught us both to play music which became part of both of our lives for years to come. My prayers are with Bobbie and all Freddy’s family. Tim and Sue my prayers are with you too! Freddy has finished the race and we know he’s with our Lord.
