A man of integrity, courage, and love. UT Alumni, Navy Veteran. Scott was born and raised in Lone Star, Tx. He is a graduate of Daingerfield High School Class of 1979. A proud member of the DHS Tiger Band and an accomplished trumpet player, he went on to be Drum Major in the Navy Band where he played taps for many Naval and Government dignitaries.
Scott was an extremely PROUD Longhorn and graduated from the University of Texas Austin in 1984 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering. Upon graduation, he joined the United States Navy where he earned his Masters degree in National Security Affairs with the Naval Post Graduate School along with the equivalent of a Masters degree in Nuclear Science at the Navy’s Nuclear Power School – Nuclear Power Training Command (NNPTC). Scott believed one should “never stop school if you can help it…” and after his service in the Navy, he continued his education at UC Berkeley towards a Masters degree of Business Administration.

Scott grew up attending and was baptized at St Charles Episcopal Church in Daingerfield, Tx. He was joyfully welcomed into full communion with the Roman Catholic Church April 14, 2001 at Saint Carlos Cathedral in Monterey California.
Scott was most passionate in life about traveling the world, and what made him the most happy was traveling anywhere, anytime by train. Even his point A to B was by train. He was a planner and a first class traveler. Every other conversation was about his travels. He traveled he world, and he traveled often and has now taken his ultimate journey to the Heavens…his end journey to God where he is welcomed with loving arms and celebration by all those who he loved so dearly who have preceded him in death.

I miss you, my friend.
We both enjoyed walking through the woods and sidewalks around Sierra and shared our experiences with each other. Remember the mountain lion you encountered and warned me about? No wonder you began to carry a walking stick!
Your vacation to the New Camaldoli Hermitage in Big Sur and your vow of silence were meaningful to you. Thanks for sharing your stories with me.
Remember that food you endured on the China business trip? Somehow you survived!
And anyone who loves cats like you did is a good man. I shared that affection for cats with you.
Your train trips across the US and in Canada – what adventures you had. You were traveling to be with your family at Christmas which was important to you.
As a State Park volunteer, I was glad to host you on a tour of the Pt. Sur Light Station just south in Big Sur. You were thrilled to finally stand in the 270-foot elevation lantern and look out to sea with me. You told me how you appreciated seeing that light for many years while patrolling for Soviet submarines 100 miles off the coast. You said that you and your mates were always comforted by the Pt. Sur light on that ever-so-dark coast. I only regret that you were not able to join me on a tour of the adjacent former Pt. Sur Naval Facility that had closed in 1984 for which you had later served as “Mayor”. You told me this Navy position was not glamorous, – it only meant you were responsible for keeping graffiti from accumulating!
Most of all I remember your faith and how important your Catholic training was to you. My wife and I sat with you at Easter Mass one year. And I will cherish the times you asked me to close your office door and pray with you during one of your health battles. Thank you for letting me enjoy our Lord Jesus Christ with you. I hope to meet up with you both in our heavenly home someday soon where we can again walk together and share new stories. Your friend, Jim.
“It isn’t easy to say Goodbye, but I know it’s only for a little while…run up ahead, and “your little sister” will catch up…Cause I am gonna see you when tomorrow comes…on the other side.” I love you bubba. My hero.
Oh Jim. This is beautiful. Thank you for sharing. I hope I can meet you when we lay Scott’s ashes to rest in Monterey in a few weeks. Send me your email I’ll make you have the graveside service details. This is so special. Thank you for sharing. Kimbarnard@mac.com
Sincerely, Scott’s little sister, Kim
The family was so proud of Scott and his many accomplishments. We loved his dry sense of humor and the many adventurous trips he arranged for us.
Scott loved his home in Monterrey and but never forgot his roots here in East Texas.
He will be so missed by his Aunt/Uncles/Cousins but never forgotten.

Tap dancing to the Pink Panther, scaring ourselves on the rides at the Gilmer Yamboree and Six Flags, chanting and dancing like Indians in Mrs. Riley’s third grade class, hiking over Bassett Mountain on our frequent childhood hikes, marching together in the championship Daingerfield Tiger band and experiencing the University of Texas together are just some of the remarkable memories I have of Scott Alan. I am so proud he was part of my life. I admired his determination and tenacity that led him to be an all-state trumpet player and all-state chemistry finalist. Our annual college trips to the Texas-OU game at the State Fair of Texas were epic adventures as he made sure we took in all the exhibits and trolled the OU fans with various chants. He loved adventure and learning. I am sad that I lost touch with him over the years but will always hold my memories of him close to my heart. Rest in peace dear friend. You left us too soon. (P.S. I am sure you are enjoying Clara Lee spoiling you right now like she always did.).
Love always,
Bobby Rodden
Thank you Bobby for your sweet comments! It helps me so much when friends tell of your growing up days! You were a dear friend of his.. Since he came home, he talked of you and some of your fun times.that you and Ronald and he had. We love you always!!

Scott–Mom and Dad will miss you so much and the hurt is deep. You wanted us to see the world with you.And so it began! We all were so happy when you decided to come home so we could take care of each other and travel on trains which we had never experienced .We all were so excited. you stepped back into our everyday life. You introduced us to your love for train travels. You took us on some train trips of our lifetime and we all had the best of times and. had so much fun and loved being with you. Then, illness entered into our lives, but it did not slow you down–up to the day you left us, you were planning trips.and when the Priest came to your hospital room, who knew you were planning the most beautiful trip of all–a trip to Heaven,. That night,, We said our goodnight which turned out to be our last goodbye, We spoke-“See you tomorrow-I Love you.”. ” I Love you Mom”. Your Dad and I will get thru this because we know that you are in a better place, with no pain–God’s Beautiful Heaven and we will see you again, surrounded with many friends and family who love you, with Mamma by your side, your arms stretched out to meet us, with that sweet smile on your face. We love you!

I wish I could be there today. Scott will be missed. His wit, unique perspective…and of course our regular banter about UT v. Baylor.
