We lost an awesome friend & great drummer! In HS, we were in Dr. Bradley’s Explorers where we earned our Eagle badges. Ben honored me as his best man. Jene & Bettye were great to my family, too. Ben’s was a life well-lived! He’s not going to suffer anymore. Rest in Peace, my Friend! —-Thanks so much to Jim & Kim Sly for being there for Ben all of these years.

Although I didn’t know Ben well, I knew him through our mutual friendship with Jim Davis. The few times we met he always impressed me with his sincerity, honesty and authenticity. I know he will be missed not only by his furry companion, Jenny, Jim and all his other many human friends. Blessings to you, Ben Hay.

When I moved Hughes Springs going into the sixth grade, i was lost but Ben found me and befriended me. Our parents became friends too. He was always my friend all the way through high school and beyond. He had a great smile with lots of teeth, big black glasses and a great personality. You couldn’t miss Ben. Ben loved the drums and was really good at it . He was always drumming wherever he went. He would drum on his drum set at home. Before every football game or parade you could always hear him in the lead. If Ben didn’t have a drum, he would create one. He would tap out a beat on the dashboard, or his thighs, and much to the teacher’s dismay he would even stack books on his desk in the classroom, grab a couple of pencils and start up a beat to an imaginary song. We rode bikes together and were members of Troop and Post 66. We were both Eagle Scouts and OA members. We were in the same class and graduated together in 1966. Later, He would visit me in Houston at UH. Ben and I were both in the Army at Fort Dix at the same time. We lost contact with each other but eventually reconnected on Facebook. There was always Ben. He was always a friend for me and everyone. We will all miss you old buddy. Till we meet again. Blessings.

I’ve been friends with Ben forever. He was a year older, but we went to the FMC together, when we became adults, as well as his wonderful mom and dad. Ben and I shared the percussion together in band, and yes, he was a very good drummer and it showed. As a matter of fact, I got my little grandson a set of drums for Christmas, two years ago. And he came to our house and looked at them and set them up for us, and was so excited that I asked him. He was the same ole Ben that I always knew. Even though we both lived in alone Star and on the lake, we hardly saw each other. I always knew he was there and if I needed him for anything, he was there. I think everyone in LS knew Ben was a wonderful guy. I felt really sorry for him when his mom and dad passed away. I know how lonely he must have been. Kim and Jim became his family, and I know he loved them. I think he wouldn’t have had a life without them. I wish I had made more of an effort to talk to him. We don’t realize that sometimes, until it’s too late. I will miss you, Ben. It’s been nice knowing you, but I’ll be seeing you again. I know how much you loved, Don, so tell him hello for me. Rest In Peace, sweet Ben.

I knew Ben for many years. I got to work with him at the plant for 10 years. Always loved talking guns and related topics with him. He always had a story to tell you. He was a good man.

I was saddened to hear of Ben’s passing. I left LSS in 1999 and have seen very few people from there since I moved to the Houston area. We were friendly at work and visited each other’s homes. We loved to compare notes on guns and to knock back a few beers from time to time. Ben was a truly unique individual and I always enjoyed him. I was at the plant for 23.5 years and he was there for all of them. Rest in peace old friend; no more pain now. I was so moved to hear of the care provided to him these last few years. His caretakers should have a very special place in heaven.
